Alternatives to reach Montañita from South America-South
From Buenos Aires:
Starting from Bs. As. Are various options available to get to Bolivia, and so begin the journey to Montanita.
- Take a direct bus to La Quiaca, we would be there at the border crossing Bolivia. (Approx 60-80 dollars. 26hs journey).
- Pay a little more and go by bus to San Salvador de Jujuy. From there take another bus to La Quiaca, having the chance to visit the beautiful and characteristic northern towns of Jujuy and Humahuaca and Tilcara. (From Jujuy capital to La Quiaca we travel about 4 hours at a cost of $ 10).
- Take a train from the Retiro station to the province of Tucuman and from there take a bus to La Quiaca. It is the cheapest option of all. The train trip to Tucuman takes about 36 hours, so it will take more than the other cf options to reach the border with Bolivia.
From the border of Argentina, Bolivia:
From the terminal of La Quiaca to the border crossing there are 5 blocks away, so you can walk to Villazón, the Bolivian people is bordered by La Quiaca.
From the second block are different agencies of change. It is always advisable to ask at all as is the change to get the best price, since it varies by agency, your nationality and your appearance. From Villazón can go direct bus to La Paz or go to Oruro or Potosi and from there to La Paz; or choose other ways, in case you want to go elsewhere in Bolivia.
The journey to peace from Villazón is 18 hours approx. The bus always starts in the afternoon (18 or 19 hours). An important thing to consider is the fact that the route is not in good condition in its early stages and the buses are not comfortable, so it is advisable to be well rested and well fed for a more enjoyable trip.
From La Paz:
The terminal of La Paz is great and safe. There are small stalls to leave bags in the same terminal and an exchange house where they change at a fair price. To continue trip to Montañita we have different possibilities:
- Take a direct bus to Lima.
- Take a bus to cross the Peruvian border and stop in Puno.
- Go by bus to cross the border on their own.
- Go by bus to Copacabana. Whenever the bus crosses the border, whatever the final destination, the price is more expensive. The trip to Lima from La Paz is long but can be done in comfortable buses and offer some breakfast and lunch.
The second possibility is to go to Puno, a beautiful Peruvian city on the shores of Lake Titicaca. There's a fairly large terminal where you can take a bus ticket to go to Lima. The route from Puno to Lima offers truly incredible scenery, it is very recommended. (30-40 dollars / 22 hours of trip approx).
The cheapest option is the third, ie, go from La Paz to the border with Peru and there make the crossing on their own. From there you can go to Puno, before leaving for Lima.
Another possibility is to go by bus to Copacabana, which is an attractive town located on Lake Titicaca with lots of tourist activity and near the border with Peru.
From Lima:
Lima has no central terminal. Each of the companies have a small bus terminal, where you can find out options and prices to take a bus and go northward journey bound for Montanita. The most viable options are:
- Take a direct bus to Tumbes. This is a city located in northern Peru, very near the border with Ecuador. To reach Tumbes have two possibilities: take a bus at one of the most recognized companies paying approximately 30- $ 40, or go to the terminal called Fiori, which is located north of the city of Lima, where tickets are achieved half price going to the north of the country. The price difference is given by that Fiori is an unsafe place, where one must be very careful not to suffer some kind of robbery. Therefore, it should be to balance these issues when choosing between these two options to go by bus to Tumbes.
